Inside the Apocalyptic Soviet Doomsday Machine

29 09 2009

Well this is pretty chilling reading

I recall being very uneasy during Ronald Reagan’s game of “nuclear chicken” with the Soviets in the 80’s.  In the end the Soviets blinked, so I guess Reagan’s nuclear sword rattling won, but I have to ask what would have happened if word spread that the Ruskies had a “dead hand” machine as part of their “Mutual Assured Destruction” apparatus this entire time?  Would we still have been so provocative at this time?

While this has been discussed before, I continue to find fascinating the complete detachment in thinking between the US thinking its planned missile shield should be accepted as only “defensive” in nature and the Russians seeing it as a prelude to a US preemptive strike.

To me this is quite illuminating on Russia’s recent decision to support sanctions on Iran , right on the heels of Obama’s announcement of pulling back missiles from Poland and Czechoslovakia.  Nobody’s claiming there was a quid pro quo openly, but there sure must have been a direct connection between the two.

And why is the song “99 Luft Balloons” in my head right now?
